Farmhouses

The grass roofs are probably the first things you notice, and these have been a feature of the houses since the islands were first settled. In the Viking Age farmhouses had curved stone walls and the roof was supported by two rows of posts in a large common room with a longfire in the centre. Along the outer walls benches or seats were placed, a Faroese home today is still called a sethús (seat house) after these seats. And there is a good reason that the ancient name has survived, for on the Faroes the original longhouse lasted longer than any other place in Scandinavia.

These two Spanish covers with stamps heralding the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympic Gameswere actually issued in 1990. Both the covers and the stamps depict judo and weightlifting.

The 1992 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event celebrated in Barcelona, Spain, in 1992. The International Olympic Committee voted in 1986 to separate the Summer and Winter Games, which had been held in the same year since 1924, and place them in alternating even-numbered years, beginning in 1994. The 1992 Summer Games were the last to be staged in the same year as the Winter Games. Due to the end of the Cold War, these games were the first without boycotts since 1972. In fact the Olympics was the final success of the former Soviet Union (despite only part of it taking part), and biggest of the "Olympic flag" (Nations from the former USSR competed as the Unified Team, coming 1st in the overall rankings).

Thank you Mariafor these lovely covers.

Being a fan of folk music, Mander approaches the traditional theme from a modern and personal perspective. The Europa: National Musical Instruments sheet contains ten 1st class stamps.

This First Day Cover and the stamp on it commemorate the Centenary of Overland Telegraph line in Australia.

The Australian Overland Telegraph Line was a 3200 km telegraph line that connected Darwin with Port Augusta in South Australia. Completed in 1872 the Overland Telegraph Line allowed fast communication between Australia and the rest of the world. An additional section was added in 1877 with the completion of the Western Australian section of the line. It was one of the great engineering feats of 19th century Australia and probably the most significant milestone in Australia's telegraphic history.

Zero tolerance charity stamp

Joakim Saul is the Åland artist behind the Zero tolerance charity stamp. At 37, he has already done most and worked with some of the largest customers in the world of advertising.
When asked to create a charity stamp on behalf of Åland Post, Joakim was intrigued, especially by the challenge of communicating the sensitive anti- drug message, the quintessence of the Zero tolerance stamp. He was also attracted to the idea of designing a legal tender which, in fact, a stamp is. At first glance, the stamp bears a certain resemblance to the design of a dollar bill.

Joakim found the commission challenging, in regards of both aesthetics and communication. The objective was to make people stop and think. Anti-drug messages are generally very difficult to communicate since they may very well create a boomerang effect, in this case, make the forbidden seem more attractive. With this in mind, he fell for the idea of “temptation leading into downfall” at an early stage, illustrated by suitable symbols such as forbidden fruit, carnivorous plants and snakes.
Leaping out from all other Åland stamps, the Zero tolerance stamp should bring further attention to the serious and important matter.

A 7c stamp was issued on 16th October, 1972, to mark the Tenth International Congress of Accountants which was opened in Sydney on that date.

The stamp design shows a grouping of numerals and portions of an abacus and a computer circuit representing the advances made in accountancy techniques. Main background colours in the stamp are blue and green-blue. Other colours used in the stamp are orange and black.
The 7c Tenth International Congress of Accountants stamp was designed by Mr. Gordon Andrews of Sydney and was printed by multicolour photogravure in sheets of 100 stamps on paper incorporating luminescence at the Note Printing Branch of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Melbourne.

Mr. Andrews also designed two official first day covers for this stamp issue using themes from his stamp design. One cover showed the abacus with a background of computer circuitry and the other first day cover design presents a pattern of numerals.

A special postmarker was provided from 16th to 21st October, 1972, at a temporary post office at the venue of the Tenth International Congress of Accountants.

Åland 9.6.2014 - Robert Gabriel Helenius

Robert Gabriel Helenius (born January 2, 1984, in Stockholm), nicknamed The Nordic Nightmare, is a Finnish professional boxer.
He lives a life of sharp contrasts. Robert Helenius swings between his rolls as a father of three and an aggressive heavyweight fighter, preparation and setbacks, Lumparland and Berlin. On the MyÅland stamp he is depicted together with his family on a rock in the sun. On the FDC, a knockout hangs in the air.
The stamp series My Åland presents heavyweight fighter Robert Helenius in 2014. Together with his Åland partner Sandra Helsing and their three children, he now lives in Lumparland. Prior to meeting Sandra, Robert knew very little about Åland, but today he loves it and has only good things to say about his new domicile.
“People are very friendly, in fact, the islanders are perhaps more welcoming than people in Finland are in general. And nature here is so incredibly beautiful; I enjoy fishing and being out in the woods.”
Sandra and Robert met at the training facility in Porvoo around the time when he won the 2006 European Amateur Championships silver medal. A few years later, he signed a professional contract with German promoter Wilfried Sauerland. In 2010, he won the vacant EU heavyweight title as well as the vacant WBO Inter- Continental title. Following several years of injuries and conflicts with his boxing stable, however, Robert has now left Berlin and now trains with Ålander Tom- Stefan Witting who works with neurotraining, a new form of training.
“Through acupressure on specific muscles the nerve path between brain and muscle is revived to start better cooperating. I’ve reached extremely good results in a short time,” Robert smiles. The Sauerland hatchet is buried and Robert has his goal set on yet another World Champion title.
Photographer Daniel Eriksson has shot the photos for the stamp and first day cover. Daniel met Robert both in the training facility in Berlin and together with his family in Åland to be able to illustrate both sides of the fighter; two sides that are not always so very easy to combine.
“The most difficult situation is probably when I’ve been away from the family for 3- 4 weeks at a training camp where the idea is to bait the beast inside me. After the camp, I return home to take care of three children. It’s not so easy to switch mood, just like that. Home is where Sandra and our children are, Robert says.

This stamp was issued to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Australian Legacy Welfare Organisation on 5th September, 1973.

Legacy is an independent organisation founded in 1923 by a small group of World War 1 veterans. Legacy also supports the dependants of today's Australia Defence Force who lose their lives as a result of service.

Each year ADCU is a Gold Sponsor for the annual Big Band Sound Concert fundraiser held in Canberra at the Royal Military College Duntroon.

This event aims to maintain and raise awareness of Legacy and helps to raise much needed funds so that they might continue their vital work.

Legacy is a charity providing services to Australian families suffering financially and socially after the incapacitation or death of a spouse or parent, during or after their defence force service. It currently cares for around 100,000 widows and 1,900 children and disabled dependants throughout Australia.
